A cough that won’t quit. Breathlessness climbing the stairs. Nights spent wondering if it’s “just asthma.” I’m Dr. Zain Ahmad Khan, a pulmonologist in Karachi who treats the full range of lung diseases — and believes patients deserve to understand exactly what’s happening to them, not just be handed a prescription.
My work spans three hospitals in Karachi, bringing together clinical care, research, and teaching. Most days start in clinic, seeing patients directly — but the job doesn't stop there. I also dig into the data behind respiratory care, with a particular focus on South Asia, where disease patterns and available resources often look different from what's described in standard textbooks.
Research is a steady part of my practice too, aimed at making everyday respiratory decisions more evidence-based rather than guesswork. And a meaningful share of my time goes into teaching — working with medical students and residents to build the next generation of respiratory care.
Severity scoring, biomarker-augmented decision-making, and evidence-based management tailored to local presentation patterns.
Long-term airway disease management, phenotyping, and helping patients understand and control their condition day to day.
CT chest interpretation for complex, infective, and mediastinal disease — and teaching trainees how to read them.
Evaluation of suspicious pulmonary lesions, diagnostic pathways, staging work-up, and coordinated respiratory care.
Assessment and management of pulmonary TB, including persistent symptoms, abnormal imaging, and treatment-related respiratory problems.
Diagnosis and longitudinal care for pulmonary embolism and venous thromboembolism, with attention to risk and follow-up.
Evaluation of pleural effusions, pneumothorax, and other pleural conditions using imaging and evidence-based management.
Approach to unexplained breathlessness, diffuse lung disease, fibrosis, and multidisciplinary diagnostic evaluation.
Assessment of sleep-related breathing problems, including snoring, suspected sleep apnoea, and related daytime symptoms.
A growing library of infographics, articles, and short videos — written for patients, not textbooks.
